Nigeria’s VP honored First Lady for girls' education; teen activist urged investment in inclusive schooling.
On October 21, 2025, Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima honored First Lady Oluremi Tinubu as a role model for girl-child development during a meeting with PLAN International at the Presidential Villa. He highlighted her advocacy in the Senate and the government’s commitment to education, citing the school feeding program. In a symbolic act, 17-year-old Joy Ogah briefly assumed the vice presidential role, speaking on behalf of Nigeria’s 10.5 million out-of-school children, over 60% of whom are girls. Ogah urged sustained investment in safe, inclusive education with access to sanitation, nutrition, and free sanitary products. PLAN International called for removing VAT on sanitary pads and diapers, and the administration pledged continued collaboration with development partners.
