New Zealand passes law giving abuse survivors in care compensation, apologies, and support without court.
New Zealand has passed the Redress System for Abuse in Care Bill, establishing a formal process for survivors of abuse in state or faith-based care to receive compensation, apologies, records access, and wellbeing support without litigation.
The bill includes a review mechanism for those convicted of serious crimes, ensuring payments don’t undermine the scheme’s integrity.
It follows the government’s broader response to the Royal Commission’s findings, which also introduced protections like banning strip searches of youth in secure care, limiting placement durations, expanding the definition of vulnerable adults to include people with disabilities, and strengthening recordkeeping with enhanced powers for the Chief Archivist.
The bill now moves to a five-month review by a select committee, with public feedback encouraged.
