Miami Beach launches 7-mile underwater reef with art and coral to restore ecosystems.
Miami Beach has launched Reefline, a seven-mile underwater artificial reef project combining art and conservation.
The first phase features 22 concrete car sculptures by artist Leandro Ehrlich, designed to become coral habitats.
Over 2,000 soft coral specimens, grown by marine biologist Colin Foord and his team, will be transplanted onto the structures.
Located 700 feet offshore in shallow water, the reef aims to restore Miami Beach’s lost offshore coral ecosystem, buried by beach replenishment.
Funded in part by a $5 million city bond and seeking $6 million more, Reefline will include an onshore marine learning center and future installations like starfish sculptures.
The project, expected to take at least a decade, will be accessible to swimmers and serve as a living art and ecological landmark.
