Karnataka official accuses sand mafia of illegal mining and corruption, demanding action and a task force.
Karnataka’s Chief Economic Advisor and MLA Basavaraj Rayareddy has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to act against a large-scale sand mafia in Koppal district, alleging illegal mining and daily transport of 100–150 truckloads of sand from the Tunga Bhadra riverbank without permits or royalty payments.
He cited a network of over 200 individuals and named two officials—Senior Geologist Puspalata S. Kavaluru and officer Sukanya Hosamani—as allegedly involved in corruption, demanding their transfer and calling for a special task force to halt illegal operations.
District officials responded with a 20-point rebuttal, questioning Rayareddy’s conduct and accusing him of misusing funds and interfering in official duties, escalating tensions over resource management and accountability.
