Japan selects Prof. Shinsuke Fujioka to lead high-risk fusion energy project using laser technology.
Professor Shinsuke Fujioka, director of the Blue Laser Fusion Energy Collaborative Research Institute, has been selected as a Project Manager for Japan’s Moonshot Research and Development Program under Goal 10, focusing on fusion energy.

Fujioka’s project will advance laser fusion technology, including high-efficiency lasers, target ignition, and reactor design.
The selection followed a competitive, multi-stage review process.
Blue Laser Fusion Inc., co-founded by Nobel laureate Dr. Shuji Nakamura, is developing a cost-effective, high-repetition-rate laser system for commercial fusion energy, with support from U.S. Department of Energy funding and partnerships in major U.S. fusion initiatives.
The company holds over 100 international patents and aims to deliver gigawatt-scale, carbon-free energy for data centers, AI, industry, and homes.
