India's coal imports fell 0.6% to 20.58 million tonnes in August 2025, driven by an extended monsoon that disrupted transportation and reduced industrial and power demand. Non-coking coal imports dropped to 11.55 million tonnes, while coking coal rose to 4.82 million tonnes. For the April-August 2025 period, total imports declined to 118.07 million tonnes from 121.18 million tonnes, primarily due to weaker demand during the rainy season. Analysts attribute the slowdown to weather-related challenges, though long-term demand is expected to grow with planned thermal power projects.
