Indian toll workers protest over small Diwali bonus, halt tolls for hours, demand pay rise.
On October 20, 2025, 21 toll workers at the Fatehabad plaza on India’s Agra-Lucknow Expressway halted toll collection for about two hours, opening all gates to allow over 5,000 vehicles to pass free, in protest over a Rs 1,100 Diwali bonus.
The workers, employed by Shri Sign & Datar, said the amount was far below last year’s Rs 5,000 bonus and criticized the company’s recent takeover in March as justification for limited compensation.
The protest caused traffic disruptions and prompted police intervention.
After negotiations, the company agreed to a 10% salary increase, leading workers to resume operations.
The incident highlighted ongoing labor tensions over pay and working conditions on India’s key transportation routes.
