Higher education groups oppose new federal data rules, citing burdens and accuracy risks.
On October 20, 2025, multiple higher education organizations, including NAICU, the Presidents Forum, and the Association of American Universities, submitted public comments to the U.S. Department of Education opposing proposed changes to federal data collection and transparency rules.
They warned that new requirements could impose excessive administrative burdens, disrupt operations, and compromise data accuracy, especially for smaller and nonprofit institutions.
Concerns were raised about the scope, feasibility, and impact of proposed admissions and consumer transparency mandates, with groups urging the Department to ensure policies are evidence-based, collaborative, and practical before implementation.
The Department is reviewing feedback as part of an ongoing public comment period.
