Four arrested in Japan for smuggling $650K in gold hidden in modified underwear from Hong Kong.
Four people, including a 34-year-old man named Masamori Nishimura, were arrested in Japan for allegedly smuggling 8 kilograms of gold—worth about $650,000—from Hong Kong by hiding gold powder in modified underwear.
The women, in their 20s and 30s, were recruited by Nishimura, received the concealed clothing in Hong Kong, and flew to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport in July 2024.
All admitted to evading roughly $65,000 in taxes.
The case was referred to Tokyo police by customs officials amid a rise in gold smuggling tied to record gold prices, which hit 23,370 yen per gram in Tokyo on October 21, 2024.
