Nebojsa Pavkovic, a former Serbian general convicted by the UN’s International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia of war crimes during the 1998–1999 Kosovo conflict, has died at age 79 in Belgrade.
He was sentenced to 22 years in prison for atrocities including expulsions, torture, and killings of ethnic Albanian civilians and served time in Finland before being released on health grounds less than a month before his death.
Despite his conviction, he was hailed as a national hero in Serbia, with President Aleksandar Vucic praising his service.
The conflict ended after 78 days of NATO bombing in 1999, leading to Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence, which Serbia continues to reject.
