China’s Zhang You wins Nikon Small World with image of rice weevil on rice grain.

The 51st Nikon Small World photomicrography contest has named its winners, with China’s Zhang You taking top honors for a detailed image of a rice weevil on a single grain of rice. The annual competition, running since 1974, received about 1,925 entries from 77 countries. Other winners include images of water fleas and algae, vascular bundles in bamboo, a developing chicken embryo wing, frost patterns on wood, and colonies of algae in water, all revealing the intricate beauty of microscopic life.
