Asteroid 2025 PN7, discovered in 2024, is a harmless, temporary quasi-satellite of Earth expected to remain in near-orbit until 2083.
Earth has a new temporary celestial companion, asteroid 2025 PN7, a quasi-satellite discovered in August 2024 by the Pan-STARRS survey.
Measuring 18 to 36 meters across, it orbits the Sun in near-resonance with Earth, appearing to circle our planet without being gravitationally bound.
NASA confirms it has been in this quasi-orbital pattern since at least the 1960s and will remain near Earth until around 2083.
Though too faint for naked-eye or amateur telescope viewing, it poses no threat and offers scientific value for studying orbital dynamics and small solar system bodies.
