Alabama public school enrollment dropped by 5,823 students in 2025-2026, the largest decline in 40 years, according to state officials.
State Superintendent Eric Mackey attributed about 3,000 of the departures to the CHOOSE Act, which expanded access to private schools and homeschooling.
Around half of the missing students are in non-public settings, while the rest remain unaccounted for, possibly due to unreported homeschooling.
The drop is expected to reduce the state’s education budget by $30 million and lead to about 500 teacher job losses, likely through non-replacement of retirements.
Officials are conducting home visits to locate unenrolled students and ensure all children are in education.
