William Mullis, 53, of Cocoa, Florida, faces grand theft and kidnapping charges after video footage showed him taking a woman’s car from a Sunoco gas station, driving it briefly, then returning it with her one-year-old child still inside.
Authorities say he fled on foot after the mother confronted him, claiming he wouldn’t have taken the car if he’d known a child was present.
The child was unattended for only minutes and unharmed.
Florida law prohibits leaving children under six unattended in vehicles for more than 15 minutes, especially if the car is running or the child is in distress.
Mullis is being held without bond, with his next court appearance set for early November.
