Sault Ste. Marie preliminarily approved two $750M battery storage projects totaling 570 MW to strengthen Ontario’s grid by 2030.
The City of Sault Ste.
Marie has preliminarily backed two battery energy storage projects by Aypa Power Canada LP totaling 570 megawatts and valued at $750 million, aiming to boost Ontario’s power supply and storage for the 2030s.
Located on municipal land, the projects—380 MW and 190 MW—will connect to new and existing transmission lines, respectively, and are being submitted separately to the Ontario IESO.
If approved, they would operate under 20-year contracts, with the city receiving $1.7 million in community payments and a $25,000 annual fund starting in 2029.
Construction could create 200 jobs and $30 million in economic impact, with six permanent jobs and $850,000 in annual benefits.
Council approved the move 9-2, citing concerns over company transparency and environmental impacts on a watercourse, but noted the process is still early.
