Queensland is hiring more scientists and partnering with a U.S. firm to clear a four-year DNA backlog in serious crime cases.
Queensland is doubling its forensic science team to 19 court-reporting scientists to clear a DNA testing backlog that reached four years, with six new hires already onboard and four more to follow.
The state is partnering with U.S. firm Bode Technology to process 171 samples from 53 cases, including sexual assault and murder evidence, with more shipments expected.
While ongoing sample collection limits full backlog elimination, officials aim to reduce testing times by 100 serious cases monthly.
The government insists the external help is temporary, focused on rebuilding local capacity at Forensic Science Queensland.
