Pacific nations and activists condemn New Zealand’s reduced methane target, calling it inadequate for limiting global warming.
Pacific leaders and climate advocates have criticized New Zealand for cutting its 2050 biogenic methane reduction target from 24–47% to 14–24% below 2017 levels, calling it insufficient to meet the 1.5°C global warming limit.
Officials from Vanuatu, Tuvalu, and other Pacific nations, along with environmental groups, said the move undermines regional climate leadership and risks shifting emissions to less efficient global producers.
They stressed the shared vulnerability to climate impacts like cyclones and urged stronger action.
New Zealand’s Climate Minister Simon Watts defended the change, citing technological constraints and concerns about agricultural impacts, while reaffirming commitment to international climate goals.
