Ofcom bans politicians from most news roles unless exceptional, requiring disclosure, to ensure impartiality.
Ofcom has updated its rules banning politicians from serving as newsreaders, interviewers, or reporters in news programmes unless there’s an exceptional, unforeseeable editorial reason, requiring clear disclosure of their political affiliation.
The change follows a High Court ruling that overturned Ofcom’s previous decision against GB News over Jacob Rees-Mogg’s appearances, finding the regulator had wrongly conflated news and current affairs.
The guidance now includes members of the House of Lords and party representatives in its definition of “politician,” excludes activists, and is effective immediately to ensure impartiality and public trust in broadcast news.
Ofcom prohíbe a los políticos de la mayoría de las funciones de noticias a menos que sean excepcionales, que requieran divulgación, para garantizar la imparcialidad.
