Nigeria's FRSC launches 2025 Ember Months campaign to combat rising road deaths from distracted and unsafe driving.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) launched its 2025 Ember Months campaign on October 20, highlighting a surge in road fatalities, with over 3,400 deaths reported in Nigeria so far this year.
The campaign, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” targets risky behaviors like speeding, drunk driving, distracted driving, and improper vehicle use.
FRSC officials cited 432 deaths and 2,070 injuries from 533 crashes in a 12-month period ending January 2025, blaming fatigue, overloading, and unsafe practices such as transporting fuel in plastic containers.
To improve safety, the agency is deploying personnel, offering free vehicle inspections, holding public awareness events, and expanding driver licensing with a new facility capable of producing 15,000 licenses daily.
Plans include biometric licensing and mobile courts, along with an upcoming international conference on road crash victims in Africa.
