New Zealand starts growing giant blueberries, up to ping-pong size, with first sales expected late next year.
New Zealand will begin growing the world’s largest blueberries, Eterna, up to the size of a ping-pong ball, in the Kerikeri and Waikato regions.
The Fresh Berry Company, partnering with Driscoll’s, is cultivating the genetically-enhanced fruit after passing New Zealand’s pest and disease tests.
The berries, grown in plastic tunnel houses using tissue culture, are expected to appear in limited supply in supermarkets by late next year.
The company also plans to launch its first South Island berry farm in Nelson.
A strong strawberry harvest is anticipated for Christmas, and the berry industry, which generated $120 million in sales last year, is projected to grow.
