McVitie’s rebranded Club and Penguin biscuits, removing "chocolate" from labels due to lower cocoa content, following factory closure and reformulation.
McVitie’s has rebranded its Club and Penguin biscuits, removing “chocolate” from labels due to a reformulated coating with less cocoa mass and more shea and palm oil, driven by rising cocoa prices and poor harvests in Ghana and Ivory Coast.
The change means the biscuits no longer meet legal chocolate standards, though taste tests confirm the flavor remains similar.
The shift follows the 2022 closure of the Glasgow factory, ending a 192-year Scottish legacy and costing 470 jobs.
Pladis, the parent company, also made a secret £1 million donation to Glasgow City Council.
Additionally, McVitie’s white digestives can no longer be labeled “white chocolate” due to low cocoa butter content.
McVitie's cambió la marca de las galletas Club y Penguin, eliminando el "chocolate" de las etiquetas debido al menor contenido de cacao, tras el cierre y la reformulación de la fábrica.
