A man in Ireland was convicted of killing his intoxicated brother in a stabbing after a family funeral.
A 41-year-old man from County Kerry, Fergus O’Connor, was found guilty of murdering his brother, Paudie O’Connor, 42, in June 2024 after the brothers attended a family funeral and drank together.
Paudie died from a 17cm stab wound that pierced his heart and liver, causing fatal hemopericardium.
The jury, after six hours and 48 minutes of deliberation, rejected Fergus’s self-defense claim despite his assertion that his brother attacked him with a knife.
Toxicology results showed Paudie had more than five times the legal blood alcohol limit, and Fergus was also severely intoxicated and unfit for questioning.
No defensive wounds were found on Paudie, and bloodstains suggested he walked after the attack.
Two knives were found near the scene but not linked to the crime.
Fergus O’Connor will be sentenced before Christmas.
