Georgia's opposition party returns to parliament after year-long boycott, citing need to uphold democracy and EU aspirations.
The Georgian opposition party Gakharia for Georgia has ended its year-long boycott of parliament, returning to take 12 seats whose mandates were terminated in July 2025.
Party leader Giorgi Sharashidze said the boycott failed to stop what the party calls a slide toward authoritarianism and weakened democratic checks, allowing the ruling Georgian Dream party to pass controversial laws unchecked.
The party, led by ex-Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia in exile, named 12 replacement members to rejoin the 11th convocation, framing its return as essential to defending democratic values and pluralism amid rising political tensions and threats to Georgia’s European integration path.
