A former NSW transport official is under investigation for allegedly accepting $686,000 in cash from a contractor for road contracts.
A New South Wales public inquiry is examining allegations that a former Transport for NSW official, Helmy, accepted at least $686,000 in cash from a contractor in exchange for road construction contracts.
Helmy, who was arrested in September after four months on the run, testified he counted money by rubber band bundles, a method questioned as unreliable.
He admitted sending a message suggesting he would pass cash to a friend to pay contractors, gave money to a colleague on at least two occasions, and may have misrepresented the amount received from the contractor.
He also confirmed that a former colleague, with whom he had a romantic relationship, helped count the cash.
The probe, part of Operation Wyvern, is the fourth ICAC investigation into procurement corruption at Transport for NSW since 2019 and is expected to continue into late October.
