Cambridgeshire’s public consultation ends with Option A, a two-unitary-council plan, favored by 2,000 respondents.
A public consultation in Cambridgeshire, ending October 3, 2025, received nearly 2,000 responses on proposed local government changes, with Option A emerging as the preferred choice.
This plan would create two new unitary councils—one covering Peterborough, Huntingdonshire, and Fenland, the other East Cambridgeshire, Cambridge City, and South Cambridgeshire—replacing seven current councils.
Support was strongest in the south, with backing from 67% in East Cambridgeshire to 55% in Peterborough, though lower in Fenland and Huntingdonshire.
Organizations including NHS trusts and Anglia Ruskin University supported the plan, citing improved service delivery and alignment with existing regional partnerships.
Concerns were raised about transition costs and legacy debts, which apply across all options.
The council said Option A best meets government criteria and ensures balanced representation.
