Assam to reserve 3% of Class I and II jobs for Tea tribe and Adivasi communities, effective immediately.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a 3% reservation in Class I and II state government jobs for the Tea tribe and Adivasi communities, effective immediately, including roles in the Assam Civil Service and Police Service, with appointment letters to be distributed in a public ceremony.
A bill to grant land ownership rights to tea garden workers will be introduced in November.
The reservation, already in place for Grade III and IV jobs, may benefit around 1,000 youth, and the number of reserved MBBS seats for tea community students will rise from three to four.
The initiatives were announced at the 19th biennial conference of the Assam Tea Tribe Students' Association in Jorhat, where Sarma praised the community’s contributions and the decades-long efforts of ATTSA in advancing workers’ rights and education.
