Archaeologists in Turkey found a 1,200-year-old bread loaf with a Jesus image and religious inscription, likely used in early Christian rituals.
Archaeologists in Turkey have discovered a 1,200-year-old carbonized loaf of bread with a visible image of Jesus Christ at the Topraktepe site, once part of the ancient city of Eirenopolis.
Dated to the 7th or 8th century A.D., the bread features an inscription reading “With gratitude to the Blessed Jesus” and depicts Christ as a sower, reflecting early Christian symbolism.
One of five such loaves found, it may have been used in religious rituals, possibly as communion bread.
The discovery, announced October 8, 2025, offers rare insight into early Christian practices in Byzantine-era Anatolia.
