A Western Australian tech billionaire donated $1.9M to climate-focused candidates ahead of Australia’s 2024–25 election.
A retired tech entrepreneur in Western Australia has donated about $1.9 million to climate-focused political candidates and groups ahead of the 2024–25 election, becoming one of the country’s largest individual donors.
The undisclosed donor gave $400,000 to the Greens, including state and federal campaigns in WA and Queensland, and supported independent candidates linked to Climate 200, such as Kate Chaney, Peter George, and Sue Chapman.
Motivated by concerns over rising emissions, the absence of a legislated emissions target in WA, and major parties’ continued fossil fuel support, the donor also runs a carbon farming operation.
He joins other wealthy individuals like Cliff Obrecht and Robert Keldoulis in backing Climate 200, which promotes climate action, integrity, and equality.
The full donor list will be released by the Australian Electoral Commission.
