South Africa launches R2.2 trillion energy plan to cut coal use, boost renewables, and end blackouts by 2030.
South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, unveiled the new R2.2 trillion Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2025 on October 19, 2025, replacing the 2019 version to combat persistent load shedding and boost economic growth.
The plan aims to shift the energy mix so that clean sources like solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear surpass coal by 2030, with targets including 11,270 MW of solar, 7,340 MW of wind, 6,000 MW of gas-to-power, and 5,200 MW of new nuclear capacity.
It seeks to stabilize the grid, attract investment, create jobs, and reduce emissions to 142 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2035, supporting a 3% annual economic growth target.
