Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., says he supports a standalone Senate vote to pay federal workers and military personnel during the ongoing government shutdown, despite opposing both major funding bills due to deficit concerns.
The shutdown began Oct. 1 after neither party secured enough votes to pass a funding measure.
While the House passed a stopgap bill funding the government through Nov. 21, it remains stalled in the Senate.
Paul, who has consistently opposed spending increases, emphasized fiscal responsibility and said he backs compensating essential workers even without a full budget agreement.
Democrats, led by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., say they will only support reopening the government if Republicans agree to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies and engage in negotiations.
