Sanae Takaichi, leader of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, is set to become the country’s first female prime minister after her party formed a coalition with the opposition Japan Innovation Party, following Komeito’s exit from the government.
The agreement, expected to be finalized Monday, includes plans to cut the consumption tax on food to zero, ban corporate donations by 2027, and reduce the size of the National Diet.
Though the combined LDP and JIP bloc holds 231 of 465 seats—two short of a majority—Takaichi is expected to win the parliamentary vote Tuesday.
The coalition will operate without JIP joining the Cabinet, instead influencing policy through a joint consultative body.
The main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party plans to nominate former Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, but Takaichi is widely expected to prevail.
