Rhode Island mandates universal changing stations in new public buildings starting 2027.
Rhode Island has passed a law requiring at least one universal changing station in all new or renovated public buildings starting in 2027.
The stations, designed for people of all ages and genders with disabilities or medical needs, must hold up to 350 pounds and provide space for caregivers.
They must be enclosed, clearly marked, and comply with ADA standards.
Exemptions may apply if installation is impractical or affects historic structures.
The law, signed by Governor Dan McKee, aims to ensure dignified, safe access to restrooms and follows similar measures in seven states, with 14 others considering such legislation.
