Protesters demand release of 15 penguins held 14 years in substandard London aquarium enclosure.
Protesters gathered outside Sea Life London Aquarium on October 19, 2025, demanding the release of 15 gentoo penguins they say have been confined for 14 years in a basement enclosure lacking sunlight, fresh air, and adequate space.
Organized by Freedom for Animals with support from Born Free and The Express, the "Free The Fifteen" demonstration drew 250 to 300 people, including former Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey, who challenged Merlin Entertainments CEO Fiona Eastwood to spend a month in the penguins’ habitat, offering a £1,000 donation to charity if she agreed.
Campaigners argue the facility fails to meet the penguins’ natural needs and urge relocation to a more suitable outdoor enclosure at zoos like London or Edinburgh.
While the aquarium maintains the habitat was designed with veterinary input and supports normal behaviors, critics including naturalist Chris Packham and wildlife presenter Megan McCubbin call the setup unethical and outdated, asserting Merlin Entertainments—co-owned by Blackstone, CPPIB, and Kirkbi—has the resources to relocate the birds and improve its public image.
