Palestinian medical technician freed after 20 months in Israeli detention returns to Gaza to find family killed in airstrike.
Mohammed Abu Moussa, a 45-year-old Palestinian medical technician, was released after 20 months in Israeli detention and returned to Gaza to find his mother, sister, niece, nephew, aunt, and uncle killed in an Israeli airstrike.
He was detained in February 2024 during a military operation in Khan Younis, separated from his family, and held at Sde Teiman and Negev prisons, where he reported beatings, forced kneeling, lack of water and sanitation, and untreated medical conditions, including scabies.
Though never charged, he described severe abuse and the death of a fellow detainee from a colon blockage.
He is one of over 1,800 Palestinians released under a recent ceasefire deal, many of whom returned to destroyed homes and lost families.
Israeli authorities maintain they uphold prisoners’ rights but did not address his specific claims.
