Armed gunmen attacked the office of Sunni parliamentary candidate Muthanna al-Azzawi south of Baghdad, wounding two bodyguards, days after a bomb killed another election candidate, Safaa al-Mashhadani, and injured three others.

Both candidates were running in a political landscape shaped by sectarian power-sharing, with the prime ministership traditionally held by a Shiite, the presidency by a Kurd, and the parliamentary speaker by a Sunni.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani ordered investigations into both attacks, condemning the violence targeting political figures.
