Auckland tenants ordered to pay $27,391 for severe rental property damage from dog overpopulation and neglect.
Auckland tenants Barry Phillips and Tessa Boyd were ordered to pay $27,391 after their rental property in West Auckland was left in severe disrepair following a four-year tenancy.
The home, used to house six puppies beyond the lease limit, suffered extensive damage including urine-soaked carpets, damaged flooring, broken windows, and piles of rubbish.
A 2023 inspection showed earlier signs of neglect, but conditions worsened over time.
The Tenancy Tribunal ruled the tenants were aware of the damage and awarded $23,118 for flooring repairs and $5,000 for rubbish removal, as insurance did not cover gradual deterioration.
The total reflects the cost of replacing damaged materials and cleaning debris.
