Amazon is funding a small modular reactor project at Hanford to power its AI and cloud needs with carbon-free energy.
Amazon is backing a small modular reactor project called Cascade at the Hanford site in Washington state, using X-energy’s Xe-100 design to generate up to 960 megawatts of carbon-free power.
The facility, led by Energy Northwest and funded in part by Amazon, will initially deploy four modules producing 320 megawatts, expandable to eight modules.
Construction, expected to start by the end of the decade, will support Amazon’s AI and cloud computing needs, including its xAI Colossus supercomputer.
The project aims to create 1,000 construction and 100 permanent jobs, with modular reactors transported and assembled on-site.
It’s advancing through regulatory reviews and includes workforce training through a new nuclear simulator funded by a $2 million DOE grant.
