A Waterford man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a five-year sexual abuse campaign against a girl starting at age 11.
David Kearney, 39, of Waterford, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a five-year sexual abuse campaign against a girl starting at age 11, involving rape, sexual assault, and exploitation via technology.
The abuse, which occurred across Waterford and Kilkenny from 2019 to 2023, included forced acts during car rides and the production of explicit images.
The case emerged after Kearney sent a lewd text, leading the victim to confide in her boyfriend and mother.
The judge, Mary Ellen Ring, condemned his calculated grooming, lack of remorse, and transfer of blame, noting the victim’s courage and resilience.
Though Kearney had no prior record and pleaded guilty early, the 11.5-year sentence—18 months suspended—includes mandatory therapy, no contact with the victim for five years, and probation.
