Two men sentenced for spying for Pakistan at Indian Navy sites, part of ongoing 2019 case.
A National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court in Visakhapatnam has sentenced two more individuals in the 2019 Visakhapatnam Navy espionage case, increasing the total convictions to four.
Mohammad Haroon Haji Abdul Rehman Lakdawala of Mumbai received five and a half years in prison, while Imran Yakub Gileti of Godhra was sentenced to six years, both under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
They were fined ₹5,000 each, with additional jail time if fines are unpaid.
The court found them to be agents of foreign intelligence, linked to Pakistan, who engaged in espionage at Indian Navy installations, communicated with Pakistani operatives via WhatsApp, maintained ties to Pakistan, and used illicit trade proceeds to fund activities, including transferring money to Navy personnel through online and Point of Sale systems.
The NIA, which took over in December 2019, has arrested 15 suspects, including 11 Navy personnel, with chargesheets filed in 2020 and 2021.
The investigation and trial remain ongoing.
