Michigan ramps up bus stop patrols to combat illegal passing, following 54 crashes in 2024.
Michigan law enforcement will intensify patrols next week during National School Bus Safety Week as part of "Operation Safe Stop," targeting drivers who illegally pass school buses with flashing red lights and extended stop-arms.
The campaign, led by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning and transportation partners, aims to reduce dangerous incidents after 54 crashes occurred at bus stops in 2024, resulting in 26 injuries and one fatality.
Surveys show over 2,200 instances of illegal passing in May 2025.
Drivers must stop at least 20 feet away when red lights flash, with penalties ranging from $500 fines to 15 years in prison if a death occurs.
Officials stress that hazard stops—using yellow flashers without red lights—also occur on busy roads to maintain traffic flow, but all stops prioritize student safety.
