Maine Capitol Police Chief Matthew Clancy resigned on October 8 after being arrested in August on charges of assault, refusing to submit to arrest, and disorderly conduct stemming from an incident at The Quarry Tap Room in Hallowell.
According to reports, Clancy, who was allegedly intoxicated, became involved in a confrontation after taking photos of patrons, leading to a physical altercation with a responding officer.
He was subdued and taken into custody, sustaining a minor head injury.
Clancy, who had been on paid administrative leave since his arrest, pleaded not guilty and had a 39-year law enforcement career, including prior chief roles in Massachusetts.
Lt. Steve Trahan has been named interim officer-in-charge, and the Department of Public Safety declined to comment, citing personnel matters.
