A Lincoln woman lost $5,800 to a jury duty scam where a fake sheriff’s office caller demanded Bitcoin payments.
A 29-year-old Lincoln woman lost $5,800 in a jury duty scam after a caller claiming to be from the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office threatened arrest for missing jury duty and demanded payment via Bitcoin ATM.
The scammer spoofed the sheriff’s nonemergency line, leaving a voicemail, and pressured her to make multiple payments.
After being asked for more money, she reported the incident.
Lincoln Police warn that law enforcement never demands payment over the phone or uses Bitcoin, urging the public to verify claims through official channels and report scams to local authorities or the FBI’s IC3.
