flag Lake District officials approve a 25-year plan to cut emissions, boost conservation, and support communities ahead of the park’s 100th anniversary.

Lake District National Park officials are set to approve a 25-year Partnership Plan targeting 2051, marking the park’s 100th anniversary and nearly 35 years since its UNESCO designation. The draft plan, to be discussed October 22, aims for a 77% reduction in carbon emissions within five years, a 21% cut in agricultural greenhouse gases, and improved bathing water quality. It also targets a 90% reduction in storm overflow spills, upgrades to 6 miles of paths to meet “Miles without Stiles” standards, and 40 conservation projects. The plan supports rural communities, sustainable farming, heritage preservation, and nature recovery, with 24 partners including Cumbria Tourism and the Environment Agency. If approved, it will undergo public consultation before final adoption in 2026, with the meeting open to the public in person or virtually.
