Israel’s surprise airstrike in Qatar shocked U.S. officials, damaged diplomacy, and disrupted ceasefire talks, though a hostage deal was later reached.
Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, former top Middle East advisers to Donald Trump, said in a 60 Minutes preview that Israel’s surprise September airstrike on Hamas figures in Qatar left U.S. officials shocked and betrayed.
They said the attack, which targeted a negotiating team in Doha, undermined critical diplomatic channels with Hamas through Qatar, damaged relations with key allies like Egypt and Turkey, and disrupted ceasefire efforts.
Kushner stated the U.S. felt compelled to restrain Israel, fearing reckless actions threatened long-term interests.
Despite the setback, a deal was reached for the release of 20 living hostages and the return of remains of others.
