India's Chandrayaan-2 detected solar CMEs drastically increasing the Moon's exosphere density, aiding future mission planning.
India's Chandrayaan-2 orbiter has made the first direct observation of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) impacting the Moon’s exosphere, detecting a tenfold increase in neutral atom and molecule density on May 10, 2024.
Using the CHACE-2 instrument, ISRO confirmed that solar CMEs significantly disrupt the Moon’s thin atmosphere, which lacks a magnetic field or protective atmosphere.
The findings, published in August 2025, validate theoretical models and provide critical data for future lunar missions and habitat design.
The orbiter remains operational in a 100 km orbit.
