Hospital kitchen staff in Samoa walked off the job over unpaid overtime, causing meal delays for patients.
Hundreds of patients at Samoa’s Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital missed meals on Thursday after kitchen staff walked off the job over 11 weeks of unpaid overtime, marking the first such incident reported.
The hospital, with about 200 inpatient beds, saw no breakfast served across wards and emergency units.
The Ministry of Health arranged for two private catering companies to deliver pre-packed meals, with a government van distributing food by 6 p.m. Acting director-general Tagaloa Dr Robert Thomsen attributed the disruption to a “miscommunication” and confirmed staff would return the next day.
The unpaid overtime was reportedly around WST$150 per week.
