A hog manure spill occurred in Louisa County, Iowa, on October 16, 2025, when a hidden iron fence post tore a manure line during application, releasing an unknown amount into a tributary of Roff Creek near Q Avenue and 65th Street.
The Catnip Ridge crew stopped pumping immediately, clamped the line, and installed dams and a culvert plug to contain the spill.
Fresh water was added to flush the area, and ammonia levels tested at 2.0 parts-per-million.
Initially, no dead fish were found, but a small number were later observed downstream.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating, monitoring cleanup, and assessing enforcement.
This is the second manure spill in Iowa that week.
Experts recommend delaying application until soil temperatures fall below 50°F to reduce runoff, though storage limits often pressure farmers to apply sooner.
