A former Minnesota Teacher of the Year was sentenced to over 14 years in prison for sexually abusing a 14-year-old student.
Abdul Jameel Wright, a 39-year-old former Minnesota Teacher of the Year, was sentenced to more than 14 years in prison for first-degree sexual conduct with a 14-year-old student at Harvest Best Academy in Minneapolis between 2016 and 2017.
The conviction followed a trial where Wright waived a jury, and the victim’s testimony was key.
Prosecutors sought a 172-month sentence, citing prior allegations and abuse of authority, while his defense requested 144 months.
Judge Sarah West found Wright not credible, noting he lied under oath, and emphasized his ongoing risk to public safety.
He will serve 10 years of probation, must register as a sex offender, and received 38 days of credit for time served.
The case was prosecuted by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.
