A former Hydro-Québec researcher faces trial for allegedly stealing battery tech and joining China’s talent program.
A former Hydro-Québec researcher, Yuesheng Wang, is on trial in Longueuil, Quebec, accused of economic espionage for allegedly publishing battery research without approval and participating in China’s Thousand Talents program.
The Crown claims he sought to help Chinese entities commercialize confidential technology, citing a 2022 publication that bypassed Hydro-Québec’s intellectual property committee.
Senior managers testified they did not initiate an inquiry before an internal probe was launched after the paper surfaced, leading to Wang’s suspension in August 2022 and termination in November.
Confidentiality rules apply to ongoing research, including lab notebooks, and employees must disclose outside work, especially in the battery sector.
The trial, paused for a week, resumes October 27, with the Crown potentially adding witnesses.
