A 53-year-old Florida man, William Mullis, faces grand theft and kidnapping charges after allegedly stealing a car from a Sunoco gas station in Cocoa on October 17, 2025, while a 1-year-old child was inside.
Surveillance footage shows him driving away, then quickly returning the vehicle after realizing the baby was in the back seat.
The child’s mother confronted him, and according to an arrest affidavit, Mullis said he wouldn’t have taken the car if he’d known the child was inside.
He apologized and fled on foot.
Authorities say the child was unharmed and had been in the car for only minutes.
Under Florida law, leaving a child under six unattended in a vehicle for more than 15 minutes is illegal.
Mullis was arrested, remains in custody without bond, and is scheduled for a court appearance in early November.
